Temporary Trip Permit requirements
If you’re driving a large commercial vehicle without International Registration Plan (IRP) registration, you’ll probably need a trip permit for each state or province you travel through.
You will generally need a trip permit outside your home state if:
- Your vehicle or trailer is not IRP-registered.
- Your vehicle has over 26,000 lbs.
- Your tow vehicle and trailer have a combined GVW of over 26,000 lbs.
Who Is Exempt From Temporary Trip Permit
Your vehicle could be exempt from IRP and trip permit requirements if it meets one of the following criteria:
- You’re operating a government-owned vehicle.
- You’re operating a recreational vehicle used for personal travel.
- You’re operating a chartered bus.
What Is IRP?
The International Registration Plan (IRP) is an agreement that includes 48 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and Canadian provinces. When your vehicle is IRP-registered, you log the distance traveled in each state or province and pay fees based on that distance.
If your vehicle isn’t IRP-registered, you’ll likely need a temporary trip permit to travel in any state outside your home registration state.
